In SmartSuite, you have full control over what your users can view and borrow. Administrative users can set security parameters to ensure smooth and effective access management across the system.
To implement effective security management, there are two key areas to set up:
-
Patron Security Ranges
-
Catalogue Security Levels
1. Patron Security Ranges
Patron security levels are assigned to users based on their class or grade. These levels determine what content a user can access — users can view and borrow only items that match or fall below their assigned security level.
While your site can configure these settings to suit your own needs, here’s a best-practice guide for schools:
-
Year 1 → Security Level 1
-
Year 2 → Security Level 2
-
Year 3 → Security Level 3
-
and so on.
2. Catalogue Security Levels
Catalogue security levels are applied to items in your collection. These levels control who can view and circulate specific resources.
Example
Let’s say you have a collection of books intended only for senior primary students (Years 5 & 6).
-
Assign these items a security level of 5.
-
Only users with a security level of 5 or higher will be able to access them.
-
Based on the best-practice model, this means Year 5 (Level 5) and Year 6 (Level 6) students can view and borrow these books.
The following articles detail how to implement these security levels for your system:
